Introduction Health and social care providers throughout Lincolnshire have struggled to recruit and retain staff in an area where there is an inherently older workforce, a high number of people without qualifications and a 50% increase in out-commuting beyond the county borders (Lincolnshire Research Observatory 2008). The occupational therapy provision in the county is no exception and has experienced staffing shortages and long-term vacancies. However, the situation is changing, primarily due to the development of a work-based occupational therapy programme, delivered locally and supported by a strong partnership of Lincolnshire health and social care providers and Sheffield Hallam University. All 11 graduates from the first cohort were employed back into posts within Lincolnshire, and the majority (90%) of the second cohort were similarly absorbed back into the local workforce.
